2022 Australian Ignatian Camino
To mark the end of the Ignatian Year (2021-2022), which has been celebrated in many parts of the world, Magis Network Australia ran its second annual ‘Ignatian Camino’—a pilgrimage for young adults, which took place from 26 June to 3 July.

First Australian Ignatian Camino for Young Adults!
Unfortunately, because of COVID-19 restrictions, we were not able to make the pilgrimage to Spain last year. As it seemed that travel restrictions would still be in place throughout this year, we decided to look for other pilgrimage options, and that is how the first ‘Australian Ignatian Camino’ was born!

The 2018 Newman College Camino de Santiago
As in previous years, a number of students of the College undertook part of the Camino de Santiago. After the examinations in November, over twenty students headed off in three groups from Portugal to walk north to Santiago.

Inter Collegiate Swimming
Both our men’s and women’s swimming team were highly competitive at the recent Inter Collegiate Swimming Carnival. The men’s team ended as winners of their event.

The 2018 College Play – Urinetown
The most successful College Play for 2018 was the musical Urinetown. It is a satirical comedy musical with music by Mark Hollmann, lyrics by Hollmann and Greg Kotis, and book by Kotis. It satirises the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, and municipal politics.

Earlier this year, former Collegian, Jay Son was awarded his Doctor of Philosophy by the Chancellor of the University, Allan Myers.

The 37th Archbishop Mannix Memorial Lecture
Our guest speaker at the 2018 Archbishop Mannix Memorial Lecture, held on Tuesday, 14 August, was Gabi Hollows AO. Her address was entitled: Speaking on the Life and Legacy of Fred Hollows.

Galapagos Islands Travelling Studio
SCR member, Maria Camacho Muncha writes: As international student at Melbourne School of Design, I had the opportunity to be part of Galápagos Islands Travelling Studio. The program involved students from Melbourne University, Auburn University, University of Chicago and University of San Francisco de Quito whom travelled to Galápagos Islands from 18 June until 14 July 2018.

The Howard Smith Exhibition Prize
The Melbourne School of Engineering awarded second year Science student, Xavier Rui, the 2017 Howard Smith Exhibition Prize. This prize is awarded to the student with the highest average in the subjects Engineering System Design 1 & 2. Xavier was presented with this award at the recent Science Dean’s Honours Evening at the University of Melbourne.

Valete 2017
A record 58 students qualified as valetants this year. On Friday, 6 October 2017, the College gathered in the Chapel and the Dining Room to celebrate our annual Valete Mass and Dinner.

Netball 2017
Our Netball team, after winning five of their six games in the preliminary rounds, lost in the semi-finals to Trinity College in the inter-collegiate competition.
