The Archbishop Mannix Travelling Scholarship
Newman College administers a scholarship established by its founder, Archbishop Daniel Mannix, and named for him. He intended it to enable Catholic graduates of Melbourne and other Australian universities to persue higher degrees overseas. The Archbishop Mannix Travelling Scholarship is granted for two years, but may be extended to three. The scholarship is currently valued at $60,000 p.a., and is currently held by Mr Bailey Gladman, who is reading Political Theory at the London School of Economics.
The scholarship will be offered next in 2027 or 2028.
In order to be eligible for consideration, a candidate should:
- intend to pursue an academic career in Australia;
- give evidence of capacity for successful research;
- possess the qualities of character and general ability which would justify the hope of his or her becoming a competent member of the teaching staff of a Tertiary Institute and a well-reputed Catholic in that office;
The Scholarship is awarded every two or three years.
Some preference is given to applicants who are graduates of the University of Melbourne, although the award may be made to graduates of other Australian universities.
