Spem in alium – The Triumph of Judith
The Newman College Dining Hall
Featuring
Thomas Tallis Spem in alium for forty voices
Using some of the most sumptuous scoring of the Renaissance and Baroque, this concert celebrates the triumph of Judith, an Old Testament heroine who saves Israel by beguiling and then beheading Holofernes, the general of the besieging armies. The Choir retells the story of Judith drawing on oratorios by Scarlatti, Vivaldi and Mozart sung from the galleries of the Burley-Griffin designed Dining Hall. Interspersed are a series of toccatas by Frescobaldi played by the College Organist, David Macfarlane.
Concert 3 - Saturday, November 30, 5:00pm
The Newman College Oratory
The Play of Herod
Originating from a monastery in Medieval France, the sung Play of Herod depicts the stories relating to the Wise Men and the slaughter of the innocents following Christ’s birth. The tale is told in haunting chant and adventurous Medieval polyphony. Superimposed are the exotic sounds and scents of the continents from which the Wise Men originate. The play is performed by actors and singers from the Choir of Newman College.
