A Community of the Spirit
Newman College espouses the humane, religious and cultural values of the Roman Catholic Church, but students of other faiths are welcomed and encouraged.
All students of the College enjoy the opportunity to maintain an active spiritual life. The College Chaplain, the four resident Jesuit priests and members of staff ensure that the spiritual, religious and pastoral needs of the students are met.
Retreats, pilgrimages, prayer groups and discussions groups are available to help young people move to a more mature faith. In recent years, a group from the College have undertaken part of the Camino de Santiago.
Our services in the Chapels provide students with the opportunity to be musicians, readers and to act as special ministers. Mass is offered daily and all are welcome. The Archdiocese of Melbourne does not allow christenings or funerals at Newman College Chapels, except for regular attendees at Newman College Masses.
There is a considerable emphasis placed on community service and linking their faith with works. Students are encouraged to give much of themselves without seeking recognition or reward.
